"The North American Box Office was no match for the Dragon Ball franchise and its Super Saiyan warriors. “Dragon Ball Super: Broly,” the highly-anticipated new anime feature from Funimation Films, the theatrical division of Sony Pictures Television’s Funimation, opened as the #1 movie in the U.S. with a stunning $7M+ box office on its first day. Opening on 1,440 screens including 180 IMAX and Cinemark XD premium large format screens, “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” also took 1st place among the Top 10 movies with a $5,695 per screen average. Based on yesterday’s box office, “Dragon Ball Super: Broly,” the 20th Dragon Ball feature film, is the biggest opening for an event film ever as well as the 5th highest earning anime theatrical opening of all time. The film’s $7M+ box office also sets a new opening day record for Funimation Films. The previous record was $1.97M set in 2015 by “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’,” the 19th Dragon Ball film.
“Both anime and mainstream audience response to ‘Dragon Ball Super: Broly’ has been overwhelmingly positive. We anticipated a strong opening, but we’re thrilled that the box office exceeded even the high end of our estimate,” said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and President of Funimation. “We’re thrilled to hear that countless fans have or plan to watch the film multiple times. Fans are at the core of our strategy for this film. From the theatrical campaign and fan engagement events to our theatrical footprint and IMAX / Cinemark XD opening day presentation, our goal has been to make ‘Dragon Ball Super: Broly’ available to as many fans as possible through the widest array of touchpoints. This strategy has paid off.”
“Dragon Ball Super: Broly” follows the events of the hit anime series “Dragon Ball Super,” the first new Dragon Ball storyline from original creator Akira Toriyama in more than 18 years. Since premiering in summer 2015, “Dragon Ball Super” has propelled the popularity of the franchise globally – with both lifelong fans and a whole new generation of children and teens. The 2015 release of “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’,” was a box office blockbuster – grossing $8.4M in North America to become the first independent film to make the Top 10 list of highest grossing anime films domestically as well as establish a new record for the highest grossing event style theatrical release in the U.S."

It will be interesting if it beats the first Pokemon movie overall. People went nuts for that one. I even remember going and getting that Mew card. lol

@Beerus It will not past Pokemon the 1st Movie if it got a normal theater releases it would be able too. Pokemon the 1st Movie had a normal theater release. Dragonball Super Broly only had 1 screening per day where Pokemon the 1st Movie had 5 or 4 a day. Realistically the best thing it can past is Pokemon 3: The Movie aka the last Pokemon movie that got a normal theater releases. You can see why basic on the numbers. Every since Pokemon movies had got limit theater releases. Unless it started getting more dates add late on? Then it may be able to taken down Yu-Gi-Oh the Movie. But it will never get past Pokemon the Movie or Pokemon 2000 as though had strong normal theater releases numbers.

Ah right. I forgot it is only limited show times. It won't beat it then but it is a good start. Maybe future movies will get a full screening like the first Pokemon did.

@Beerus I feel like that screw by not giving Dragonball Super Broly normal theater releases after it strong number it got for ROF back in 2015. That never learn.

Yeah, they really should have given them more time. Goku was in the Thanksgiving Parade in NYC. That is enough proof this anime is mainstream enough in America. The fanbase in general is HUGE.

Man y'all really have come a long way. Unfortunately for me I can't truly experience the feelings the fans must be having about this since I myself only started getting into Dragon Ball 2 years ago

Been nearly 20 years for me lol

When you look at the time gaps though, there was a huge stretch where they didn't have anything new other than Dragon Ball Z Kai which wasn't until 2009. I don't really even know when it fully blew up. I remember being in school and no one talking about it cause you'd get made fun of and now I see NFL players doing fusion dances and what not. It is mind-blowing.

I haven't watched it yet. Not much of a theater person. I plan to watch it after they release it. Not sure when that will be but I will have to avoid spoilers for some time. I am keeping myself occupied watching Dragon Ball and after this, Dragon Ball Z.

@Beerus Late 1999 is when I got into it. Not Kai. I grew up with the greatness we had with DBZ!

I will be honest, I knew the movie would do well but I did not expect it to get this level of earnings. It is really impressive.
