It also felt more like game designers tried. They were pushing limits of systems*, rendering amazing sprites and graphics within the bounds of what they had, and were pushing out (generally) solid stories and (mostly) polished games because they couldn't just release a DLC or patch later on.
Now it's just like "Oh, it's been 2 months. Must be time for a new John Madden's Call of Duty Y2K Basketball Violet version".
*whole reason the Blue Shell was invented was so the N64 processor didn't freak out with keeping track of all the players as everyone drifted further apart
