Dragon Ball Anime Series (Plus Movies!) In Chronological Order

dragon ball order.jpg

Watching the Dragon Ball anime series with all the movies and specials in chronological order can be tedious work! With a whopping 24 movies/specials on top of over 600 episodes in total, there is a lot of content to digest here. While most specials and movies are not considered canon nor is the entirety of GT, I am going to be including them in this list for the sake of watching as much Dragon Ball content as possible. Because the movies and specials aren’t part of the “true timeline” the stories won’t fit perfectly but according to ability and power-scaling, they will make sense. So if you are interested in watching everything in order, you have come to the right place!

Have you ever attempted to watch everything the series has to offer in chronological order?
Do you think there is a better, more logical order for the anime, movies, and specials to take place?

Last edited:
does this timeline make sense chronologically like if you watch the movies in the spots that you said or is it just based on power levels and does it still make sense if you watch z kai instead of normal z?

Kai just has less filler and has been touched up a bit in terms of animation. It doesn't matter which version you watch, it will still line up with the movies.

While the original Dragon Ball anime followed Goku through childhood into adulthood, Dragon Ball Z is a continuation of his adulthood life, but at the same time parallels the maturation of his son, Gohan, as well as other characters from Dragon Ball and more. The separation between the series is also significant as the latter series takes on a more dramatic and serious tone. The anime also features characters, situations and back-stories not present in the original manga.

Have you ever attempted to watch everything the series has to offer in chronological order?
Do you think there is a better, more logical order for the anime, movies, and specials to take place?

why do we fin dragon ball super then go back to dragon ball z?

and does this mean the movie is condensed version of those episodes?
MOVIE: Battle of Gods (DBS Episodes 1 – 14)
MOVIE: Resurrection “F” (DBS Episodes 15 – 27)

As movies, they fall under DBZ but they were converted to be part of the series under DBS. So if you watch DBS, the movies take place under those episodes of the series.

can someone explain why the dub episodes for dbz are listed different than the sub? is there entirely different dialogue that doesn't slot the movies as well into place in the timeline between dub and sub?

The original release (the sub version) was altered slightly for the dubbed version.

should i watch normal z or kai? i dont think goku vs frieza is gonna be enjoyable much in normal z since its so long and i was already getting bored of fights in db that went for like 4 episodes but i feel like if i watch z i might miss some like iconic bits or something like that

I must ask why the ten year time skip between super and end of z is different for the listed dub episodes. Episode 287 is when the ten year time skip actually happens, as listed for sub watchers, but episode 272 ,as listed for dub watchers, is when Vegito was a candy fighting Buu?

i think the spot for the return of cooler is a bit off since you said that cooler 1 and 2 are after episode 139 of z which is like in the middle of the android arc and dende isnt guardian of earth at that point but he is in the movie. so unless dende replacing kami is just a movie thing or my order is messed up bc im watching kai then cooler 2 cant be right after cooler 1 where you put it. i think cooler 1 should also be put like right after namek bc in that one he doesn't seem to have control of ssj unlike how he did when he came back from the yardrats, so i think like in the movie timeline maybe he never went to the yardrats and learnt to control ssj and probably also instant transmission some other way. (also im only towards the end of androids rn so i could be wrong about what im saying)

i've just had a theory that makes worlds strongest make a little more sense but it doesnt put it in the main timeline. i think the movies have their own alternate timeline where the main story beats do happen just slightly differently. like worlds strongest isnt after saiyan saga, and is instead after namek but in that timeline goku never learnt to control super saiyan on yardrat. that would explain why piccolo is there and why goku didnt use super saiyan in that movie. it could also explain why he seems to not have control over it in coolers revenge as that one is definitely after namek but if you go along with him not having control over it, then it makes more sense. that would also explain why he used it in lord slug even though that one was kinda just toei or whoever made that movie tryna beat toriyama to the punch. idk if this fits the other movies bc i havent seen them yet but i think it makes sense for the first 5. someone else also probably already had this theory though as well
