This is just a cool random idea I had after re-watching the resurrection-F movie, and it goes something like this:
Time: After beerus has arrived on earth, and Goku has god ki.
Everything is calm, and Goku and Vegeta are now training with his, yet they do not yet have ssgss. Little does everyone know however, a cell junior had survived Gohan in the original cell saga. This cell jr had been hiding and training up till this point, and taking data from Goku, beerus, and other enemies like majin buu, and has concocted a plan. He visits Cell in hell the same way Goku visited Frieza, and using the piccolo DNA in both of them, fuses with him. Due to the cell junior being alive, Cell is brought back, and because the cell junior and cell had both been training the whole time, Cell gains new power. Using the data gathered from majin buu, not only does he now have rapid regeneration, but he has combined the Saiyan oozaru form with his explosion form to create a new form. He comes back to earth and slowly begins taking lives from the earth to power up, but in a more subtle way now. Instead of huge areas, he takes random people from all over the world and therefore arouses little suspicion. He by now has accumulated enough power to rival SSG, and now heads to Gohan who doesn't stand a chance. Cell comes to Gohan when he is alone and stabs him, kills him, then absorbs him. His grand plan is now ready.
He heads to West City and kills and absorbs everyone. Cell does this to warn Goku who soon arrives with Vegeta, and they start to fight. It is soon shown, however, that cell is far stronger than the other two, and beats them to a pulp. He then tells Goku he killed Gohan and absorbed him, and proves it by using Gohan's voice. Rage takes over Goku, and pushes him into ssgss, something cell didn't anticipate. He transforms into his new form, a huge cell with a massive energy boost. Goku and Vegeta put all their energy into a Kamehameha-final flash attack, and make it so big it completely covers cell, and destroys every last bit, so he can't regenerate, and so dies. They use the dragon balls to bring back Cells victims, and Gohan and all ends well.
