Here we go again, the fires of Arizona are starting up once again. The first fire is a relatively small fire at only 27 acres and 50% containment, while the Big Horn fire in Tucson is standing at 12,345 acres and 11% contained and spreading fast. The last thing AZ needs right now, or indeed anywhere, is for wildfires to start spreading again like they have done in the past few years. Here's hoping they can be contained and extinguished soon enough! Next thing they'll be back in CA, too...

I heard about this like a week or so ago. Something about dry weather in Arizona causing concern. I hope people stay safe and get out of the way if it gets too close.

Yep, the dry conditions make it absolutely perfect for fires to spread. Fortunately AZ fire crews are very experienced at dealing with these sorts of fires and know how to combat them, so I've no doubt they'll get them both under control and get them out quickly. It's unfortunate these keep happening, and made worse by the fact that so many of them are man-made fires. Hopefully neither of these were!

It does seem like they tend to get things under control there a lot faster than California.

What do they do to control them?

In fairness to California a lot of their fires start in areas that are quite hard for firefighters to gain access to, so they have more time to spread; however, yeah, AZ has improved a lot and seems to get fires under control very quickly. A lot of that boils down to the unfortunate amount of experience, but also the use of hotshot jumpers and their ability to get ahead of and therefore contain blazes. California has the advantage of having oceans and lakes to send water bombers to, while AZ has more limited supplies on that front, but even at that, it takes a great deal of skill for these firefighters, in both states, to stop them from ripping through the states and taking countless lives with them.

Credit to California, though, one thing they do that I think more should adopt -- inmate firefighting crews. Puts inmates to work, teaches them a very useful skill, and gives them real world experience and purpose that often stops them from recriminating.

I didn't know they did that with inmates, that is cool. I think the general system for criminals is designed in a way to, unfortunately, keep them going back to crime. If they can build a skill that is a leg up. I know some businesses grant a second chance opportunity, we have several in the Cleveland area.

I completely agree with you, I think programs like that are great and necessary, it sets them up with a genuine skill and that will have an impact on that persons' options in life going forward, so they likely will make smarter choices than turning back to crime. The post-incarceration employment opportunities aren't super, but there departments willing to give them a chance. I think if that spreads and more programs like it are started, it would have a tremendous impact on recidivism rates. The problems with the US prison system as it stands is that they mostly just throw people in cells until they serve their time and leave them to their own devices. That's never going to work. Put them to work, rehabilitate them and reeducate them, and give them a purpose during their time. Not like labour camps, but genuine skilled work. Then see how they fair in the world when they're released.

That it most definitely is! Could've done with a nice slow fire season, all things considered, but nope...looks like we're off and running again just like always.

Introducing the Bush Fire, a 64,000 acre, 0% contained monster of a wildfire that has now forced thousands of people to evacuate in the Nothern areas of Arizona, the current largest fire actively burning in the US.

AND

The Bringham fire in Southeastern AZ, burning at 14,625 acres and 5% contained.

The current other fires burning:

Someone needs to run back the 2020 update already. Too many broken files.

The Bush fire has now reached 150,000 acres, making it the 5th largest fire in AZ history. Whoo?

Here's a neat image of what that looks like on a map:
