While 2020 was rough for average Americans, the world's richest only got richer, raking in more than $931 billion as the pandemic ravaged industries and livelihoods. Someone to rise out of the ashes of 2020 is Elon Musk, who is now reportedly the richest person on the planet.

According to Bloomberg, the Tesla Inc. and SpaceX CEO's net worth has now reached some $188.5 billion, thanks in part to a 4.8% surge in Tesla's shares. This makes Musk wealthier than the world's previous wealthiest person, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, by $1.5 billion. Bezos would've held the title of World's Richest Person Ever if not for his divorce, which saw his ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, walk away with 25% (worth about $36 billion) of his Amazon shares. Bezos also donated some of his shares in November 2020 that totaled to about $680 million.

Suck it, Bezos. You piece of dog poop.

...can we just establish a new version of the IRS that only taxes the super wealthy, and then gives that money to the lower and what's left of the middle class in the form of a stimulus? I mean, it's not like these people could ever realistically spend that much money in their lifetime, and some people out there could use that...so...come on, Super Wealthy Give Us Your Money Agency, let's get that money!

A lot of his net worth is down to investors so you can't actually take that money and give it to someone else. Elon would have to sell off his own shares for that. It is messy and doesn't make sense why one man should have all this money but I would rather this title be with Elon than Bezos at this point.

I think they should offer the super-wealthy tax breaks for donating if anything. Encourage them to give back on their own. This way it is completely tax-free donations so people will actually get the full sum and not a percentage. Maybe set up something like Paypal but only for donations. People will have their own accounts and when these billionaires donate, it is split evenly according to the people who are holding accounts. In order to be an account holder, you only need to have an ID and be a citizen. That is it. Just an idea. Not that it will ever happen.

Yeah, I know, and their portfolios are so divested into other areas that they don't ever have any actual cash on them. It's just outrageous that someone can make themselves wealthier than most countries on this planet, and while most of them have foundations through which they "do philanthropic work," it's mostly just pennies on the dollar that they're "giving away." I'd love to see them actually donate to the point that their "wealth" is enough to see them comfortably through their lives and the rest goes back to people who need it. They worked themselves into those positions, I get that, they deserve to earn a substantial amount of money, but there needs to be a limit to where they finally say I've got enough and start giving back.

I agree, a system like that would be awesome to donate towards those who actually need it. How great would it be to see a family struggling to pay their rent get a nice boost from Musk, Bezos, Gates and so on? How much does $700, $1,000, $2,000 mean to a Bill Gates or a Jeff Bezos? Nothing at all, really (what's that, dinner at a fancy restaurant for them?), but how much does that mean to the average person struggling along? A whole hell of a lot!

If only, if only. I would much rather we help each other out than the government does. That is for damn sure.
