I still view it as a canon sequel to DBZ and a fitting end to the show. If they really wanted they could potentially write Super around it and still make it fit in-between.

But the short answer is: it doesn't really matter.
 
It is canon to the dragonball Z Anime keep in mind the final episode of z directly teases gt heck they even made the MAnga Enidng less Final!
