Maybe making the switch...

Probably a long time coming, but I'm considering making the switch to Linux on my old box again. I built this one in 2011. It's old and Windows 10 is losing security updates soon. I'll still have my new PC running Windows 11, but maybe I can keep this old one going for longer on Linux.

I know @Beerus has been enjoying Linux for a while.

So tell me... any recommendations? I think you said you were using Fedora quite a while back. Anything to keep in mind while making the switch?

I am still on Fedora (42). I tried a few others but I find Fedora to just be my favorite. I would say it is probably the best one to start with and even stick with.

@Jay has tried way more distros than I have. He can probably give you better info than me.

Another thing I'm just tired of with Microsoft is them constantly trying to push using a Microsoft account to login to my computer. And the advertisements. I have the fucking Pro version, too.

Microsoft is terrible. It was never great but they are so money hungry now it is insane. I still have Windows on my laptop and any time I use it, I get constantly harassed to update. I would switch that to Linux but I use it to manage my older iPods. I haven't found a solution to that for Linux that works. I would have to run Wine and mess with all that just to get iTunes working and I can't be arsed.

Speaking of... Firefox has become insanely annoying with updates. So many frequent and on Win 11, it leaves this overlay up on my screen I have to constantly dismiss nagging me to update. I had to just turn off auto updates and now I manually download when I feel like it.

As for M$... yeah, they've gotten so bad.

Just use Brave. I been on it for awhile and use Brave Beta and Chromium as secondary browsers to use with VPNs.

I'll take a look at it. Just a shame that a browser that was once held in high regard has become so bad. But I was sick of Google and their anit-adblocker stance, that I switched back to Firefox.

I was on Firefox for years. I was reluctant to switch to Chrome but I did. I don't like Google's privacy issues so I eventually moved to Brave and have been happy with it since.

Oh, and then there's Google again... now constantly prompting me to enable their stupid AI shit in search. God damn, I'm so fucking sick of being asked to enable AI (or it automatically be enabled). My Android, Google, Windows Copilot... leave me the fuck alone!

Brave search has improved as well lol They do have AI at the top when you search but I found it to be more helpful than not. But you can turn it off.

I only use Google if I am looking for something specific like locations for food places or something and I do it in a private tab.
