Memorial Day

I still see a lot of states telling people to avoid close contact or restricting them from large social gatherings but given that the weather is nice (here it is anyway) I can't see people listening. Most people want to get outdoors, cook some food, and be around friends and family today. I'm sure there will be stuff in the news about people not being cautious and more people getting sick because of it. Same old same old.

When I was younger, I never really gave Memorial Day much thought but my Grandpa served in WW2. He sacrificed his life and later his health for this country. I think a lot of people look at today as a reason to overeat and get drunk, others don't want to celebrate the day at all... But I think for anyone who has family who served or is currently serving in the military, navy, airforce, etc. know this day is about them.

While my family doesn't gather like they used to (not since my grandpa and nana passed away), we still have a small gathering for the holiday.
I'm going to spend time outside and enjoy some grilled BBQ chicken cause 'Merica, that's why! USA! USA! USA!

My great uncle was in the Airforce for nearly his entire adulthood. He made it all the way up to the rank of Captain and almost became a Major.

A good friend of mine usually throws a BBQ party every Memorial Day. Sadly, thanks to this pandemic, it's not happening. Anywho, I served in the Navy for a bit. Not much to say about that though lol.

I've been to friends' houses in the past on Memorial day for BBQs and friendly gatherings, but for the most part I don't observe it. In Britain and other Commonwealth nations we have Remembrance Day in November that I still sometimes observe, because a great deal of my family members have served in the various services and it seems appropriate to honour that.

Remembrance Day in the Commonwealth nations serves the same purpose as Memorial Day here. Veteran's Day is celebrated the same day and we just changed it to honor those who are currently serving and who are living veteran's.

Memorial Day should be a day of celebrating freedom, but it should also be a day of commemoration and taking time to understand why we can gather together to party, be stupid on the internet, and especially in the U.S.A. where we have constitutionally guaranteed freedoms unlike practically every other nation on Earth. So while you're out hitting the grill and enjoying a hot dog. Take a minute to pour one out for the many men and women who wished they could be there enjoying it with you.
