I posted this on May 8th, 2021. Apparently being pretty high on my "To play list" means I'll play it in 464 days. But yes, I've finally played & beaten Super Metroid, this is only the second 2D Metroid I've played. The other one being Metroid Dread, and to be totally honest, I'm not 100% sure which one I prefer, they're both fantastic games. I think Dread's level design can be a little more, "Where do I go?" than Super Metroid. There were a couple points in Dread where I had to look up how to progress. Not a whole lot, but enough times to make me feel like an idiot. Whereas in Super Metroid, there was only one time I had to look up how to progress, and I actually knew where to go, I just didn't see the grapple beam tiles and assumed I couldn't go that way. I'm not an idiot, I'm just blind. Also love the pacing of Super Metroid with doling out upgrades, you get them frequently enough that you never go too long without that dopamine hit, but not so frequently that you still feel like you earn them. Also the game doesn't have EMMI sections, which had their moments in Dread but largely felt annoying to me. Dread's movement options and incredible boss fights are enough to counter all that. Either way, I totally get the Metroid hype. Final thoughts, I also played and 200.6% Symphony of the Night since then, so my assumption that I wouldn't like Metroidvania's really made an ass out of you and me.
