Me, and I agree with your sentiment (but still play them).

I think Game Freak messed up with Generation 3 because of additions like natures, as well as too much water. In Generation 4, the Pokémon became overpowered (although not to a ridiculous degree like we see in Generation 6 and onwards), and they included too much backtracking. These additions ruined the simplicity we see in the first two sets of games, and they’re still not as bad as every other generation in my opinion (I still tolerate them as well as Generation 5 however).

I've been playing the Rocket Edition FRLG ROM hack. It's pretty interesting. It gives some nice backstory to what happens during and before the game.

Several. I just finished Unbound.

My favorite is Pokémon Brown although I think Crystal Clear might be objectively better.
