I remember seeing the older ones from back in the day. I think they looked a lot grosser and were generally not as safe to eat but I would imagine they had a much longer shelf-life.
This stuff doesn't look that bad. You can guy the ones they are eating on Amazon. As intrigued as I am, I don't think I would be willing to try this outside of a survival situation though. lol

 
They do seem to have improved over the years, because the old ones looked worse than questionable. Still not something I'd eat unless I had to.

The kids these days don't know how good they have it with their MREs. I remember some truly heinous ones like "Ham" slice, Chicken ala king, and "Beef" steak. The last one wasn't too bad because you can season out the taste with the included tabasco and it came with combos.

I remember seeing some real old ones being opened up and they all came with cigarettes lol boy have the times changed

That's before my time. I'll have to ask my father in law if he ever saw the ones with cigarettes cause he joined in '83.
