So earlier i made a Youtube video about this. Basically, the theory is that in order for a Destroyer to become a God of Destruction try first must pass a test. That test is to destroy their own planet. Why? Because being a destroyer you CAN NOT feel any kind of regret or empathy for the life forms living on the planet. Being a destroyer you ca not show any kind of weakness. Which is why destroyer your own planet builds you up mentally and emotionally.

But what are your guy's thoughts?

I never put much thought into it but there can be something to this. Whis mentions wanting to recruit Vegeta and have him become a future god of destruction.

Vegeta, of course, offers Whis food instead for his training and he accepts/

Maybe this was because his planet was already destroyed? It appears the angels in Whis' ranking train them to become this and likely teach the "hakai" move.

Going to mention something that happens later in the Tournament of Power but I will put it in a spoiler, if anyone only watches the dubbed version, ignore this!
I believe that this is how Toppo or "Top" was able to take the hakaishin form in the Tournament of Power as he was in training to become a destroyer.

Ironically, this is the opposite of Supreme Kai roles and if you kill the SK of said universe, the destroyer dies. It is the balance of good and evil. It is actually a deep metaphor to real life. A lot of hidden gems like that throughout the series I gotta tip my hat to. It is the "yin and yang" of life. Without evil, we wouldn't know what "good" is and without good, evil wouldn't have a wall to push against.

It would make sense, because as you said, it'd prove that they don't care about anything other than their duties as destroyers.
