Despite is evil and sadistic tendencies early on in the original Dragonball series, Tien Shinhan became on the of most selfless and noble characters in the series. Once shown the light by Master Roshi and befriended by Goku, he became very dedicated to keeping up with Goku and doing the right thing. Two of my favorite Tien moments are, during the Saiyan saga, when Chiaotzu is about to self-destruct on a Nappa and you really see how much Tien loves his friend. My other favorite Tien moment is when he's up against Cell in his second form. He gives everything he has to prevent Cell from absorbing Android 18. For me, it was one of those moments that gives goosebumps.

What other moments have you seen where Tien shows true compassion and selfessness to help his friends?

Those are Tien's best two moments, by far. They're emotional, they're big moments within the context of their occurrence, and they show Tien's true character. For me, I also can't help but laugh at his effort to have a personality when telling a "joke" on King Kai's planet. A great moment that shows he'll do anything if it helps him progress as a fighter.

I suppose you could also look at his redemption moments after leaving the Crane Hermit and fighting beside Goku and co against Piccolo, though that was more of an arc than a singular selfless/emotional moment.

I would agree with that, completely. Once he separated and went on his own path he was a morally righteous person, so being misled by someone he thought was leading him down the right path is completely understandable.
