Pokemon Why does the animation for Pokemon seem... worse?

I haven't watched the animated series in a long, long time. I remember the voices and what everything looked like though.
The lines were detailed and even. The expressions were great. Everything you'd expect from an anime was there.

Very uneven lines, silly expressions, and the animation just seems lazy and too toony. It almost looks more like a western cartoon than a true anime.
Maybe it is just me here but I think the new animation looks horrible by comparison.

What the heck happened?
 
The new anime is softer, which is what a lot of folks are doing these days, even in DBS. The original has a lot of sharp, jagged, lines (much like DBZ). I don't hate either, but they could combine components from both to make something better. For example, the hair in the original looks more real due to the detail and sharp edges.

I noticed the softness in DBS and other newer animes but I feel like they took it too far here. It feels too rounded or something.

In some cases, yes. But also, there is not as much shading and folds in the cloths. At least in the picture provided. It lacks a more 3D feeling and is rather flat.

I suppose it wouldn't look as bad if I seen the actual animation. I have seen bits and pieces but never a full episode. I think it just bothers me what they did to the human characters. Most Pokemon seem to look okay still.
 
Everything in the Pokemon Anime seems worse, really. I know a lot of people out there love to hate on everything in the Pokemon Anime, but back in the Indigo and Orange Islands, it definitely had soul and character you don't see in the later seasons. Same with Johto, it was pretty long, and many regard it to be worse than Indigo and Orange Islands, but there's a reason why the Anime lost viewers and ratings after it.

The Anime should have ended after Johto, and if they wanted to continue it, they should have with a different Protagonist.

All I know is that there is a certain demographic online screeching that they made Bea’s skin lighter in the anime vs. her appearance in the game. What gives Pokemon fans? Care to shed some light on it for an ignorant old man?
