Doesn't surprise me. These ultra liberal places like San Francisco and here in Vancouver have all but given up on enforcement and just treat it like a public health crisis. There's this non-profit, I think, van that hangs around in the downtown area where they have Naloxone and can provide support in case of ODs. The regular EMTs are just simply too overwhelmed.
So the drug use is that much of an issue? I mean if it is killing people and harming people, why would you encourage it? I get that they are picking the lesser of two evils here because shooting up is often much worse but any way of taking street drugs comes with a risk, always. No matter what. I feel like they are doing a disservice to their communities in many ways by just accepting it and allowing it. I can't imagine raising a child in a community that encourages drug use of any kind.
It has to be a two step solution that you enforce laws to curb the drug use and treat the people who have become addicted. Don't just go the treatment route because you're just giving addicts a safety net to continually OD until the day someone isn't there or can't save them and they die.
Yeah, you have to get it off the streets and discourage it with the law for it to stick. People make stupid mistakes and choices on a daily basis and many don't consider long-term consequences. That is why law and order need to factor in. Having had issues with health and never having used drugs (outside of smoking weed a handful of times and not liking it lol) seeing people piss their life and health away for something like that is heartbreaking. Health is the most valuable thing in this world and you can't undo certain damages even with all the money in the world.
