I watched Elfen Lied on Netflix years ago. I just randomly saw it and put it on for background noise and ended up enjoying it.

I absolutely loved Elfen Lied, Lucy's story is so well built out and amazingly tragic (I have a real love for tragic stories, so it really drew me in). The dog (how sadistic was that?), Kouta and his family, the music box, Nyu. Just a great series, IMO. I watched it by pure chance, as well, several years back, and I've re-watched it many times since. It's one I would highly recommend to anyone.

Battle Shonen Recommendations
Hunter x Hunter 2011
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
My Hero Academia
Ushio & Tora
GetBackers

Hunter x Hunter 2011 is my personal favorite anime, particularly for the Chimera Ant arc, which is my favorite story ever told. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has the best fights I've seen in anime, if only for the pure volume of great fights. Phantom Blood is trash though (the first 9 episodes). My Hero Academia is a break-out for a reason, really harnesses that shonen spirit and has provided at least two of my favorite episodes in anime history (not that HxH hasn't provided more but yeah).

Ushio & Tora is for those who miss the 90's style of shonen like Inuyasha or Yu Yu Hakusho but with modern day animation. The best thing about Ushio & Tora is how well-planned out it is. It might feel like it's wasting your time in the early episodes, but the whole 39 episode tells one long epic story that has one of the best climactic battles and resolutions. I have issues with it, but Hakumen no Mono is one of the best villains out there and to watch a battle shonen that's tightly-plotted and connected is fantastic and a rarity (Hunter x Hunter is better plotted but the arcs are pretty disconnected, One Piece is the only other that comes to mind but Ushio & Tora is over 800 episodes shorter and is actually finished). GetBackers is probably the least known of the five, but it's a solid fun series. The series, iirc, only has traditional shone arcs (at the end of both of it's seasons respectively), which I recall liking a good deal, but otherwise it's a COTW series about these two guys who take jobs to get back stuff for people. Kinda formulaic for that, but pretty fun.

Anime Original
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Space Dandy
Neon Genesis Evangelion (I know the manga came out first, but it was made to advertise the series and finished over a decade later so)
Death Parade
Kyousougiga
Wolf's Rain
Texhnolyze

The first three are Shinichiro Watanabe and are well worth everyone's time. Cowboy Bebop is definitely the best, everyone should watch this but Samurai Champloo & Space Dandy aren't to be slept on either. Neon Genesis Evangelion needs no explanation.

Death Parade is interesting in that it's a rare example of auteur's work in anime, Yuzuru Tachikawa created the series, directed it, storyboarded several episodes, and handle the series composition on Death Parade, and it's one of the best. Death Parade seems like it could just be a fantastic uh, Death Game of the Week but it takes the myth-arc approach, with an over-arcing story throughout which is what puts it over as a big recommendation. Kyousougiga is a pain to type as a word and blast of creative kinetic energy as an anime. Rie Matsumoto is another one of my favorite directors (probably second behind Watanabe), there's such a vibrancy in this series, and the family thematic stuff is pretty great too, some of the stuff did hit me pretty strong. It's only ten episodes, just make sure you start with episode 1. I know that sounds obvious but I believe Crunchyroll has an episode 0, which is ostensibly a recap of episodes 1-5 so you'll be spoiled hardcore if you watch that.

Wolf's Rain is a personal favorite of mine, bringing back two thirds of my dream team with Keiko Nobumoto & Yoko Kanno. Yoko Kanno is a Musical God and I think Wolf's Rain is her best work. Keiko Nobumoto is something of an unsung hero of Bebop, she handled series composition and scripted many of the best episodes (including both two parters) and this is her own series. Wolf's Rain is an allegory, and can be hard to parse since it doesn't feel like explaining a lot (exposition is kept to minimum, which is great for me but I know some people left the series confused), I think it's absolutely brilliant, with one of the strongest finales in anime. Finally, Texhnolyze . . . I don't really expect this to be anyone's tea. Wolf's Rain might not feel like expositing all it's world's history, Texhnolyze doesn't feel like talking half the time. The first episode goes 11 minutes before anyone speaks, and even then it's sparse. It communicates it's story solely through slow visual presentation. I read it was done intentionally to scare off casuals. Texhnolyze is one of the hardest series to recommend, it's one of the most oppressively bleak and void of levity series I can think of. Maybe it's because of how different it is, but I found myself really gravitating towards this tone piece, and several of the episodes did leave a big impression on me. The finale especially. This is almost certainly the most niche series I'll recommend but I don't know maybe somebody will dig it.

Sports Series
Haikyuu!!
Baby Steps
Ping Pong the Animation
Kaiji
One Outs

Haikyuu!! is about volleyball, and is a great sports anime if you just want to capture the high energy of watching sports and seeing your team make a big touchdown or something. I don't watch sports, but it has the shonen energy I was talking about in spades. Just watch the first episode, Haikyuu!! has one of the best sales pitches in anime, I'm totally confidant in saying if you liked the first episode, you'll like the rest of the series. And if you don't like the first episode, it has little to offer you and you can move on. Baby Steps is about Tennis, and is a great sports anime if you really love tennis. Baby Steps is a pretty realistic anime, and unlike most sports series, really takes a look at all aspects of the game. From the particular type of muscle training he'll have to do to even including the parental aspect when you're aiming to make a career in tennis rather than school work. And the tennis games are so well detailed and done, with a lot of unique personalities and stuff. Of all sports anime, Baby Steps has the most intimate relationship with it's sport, it's fully encompassing of all that is tennis. Ping Pong the Animation is about people, and is a beautiful series that everyone should watch. The visuals are ugly but work really well with the show, especially once it's set in motion. The amount of character development and the amount of characters that get developed in only 11 episodes is staggering, it's a fantastic series.

Is constant life or death gambling considered a sport? Because if not, then I put Kaiji in the wrong section. Either way, Fukumoto's unique art style, the Zawa Zawa, the constantly changing gambles and high stakes scenario, Kaiji is an easy recommend from me for anyone looking forward to a thrill (and there's so more meat to it's bone, in the first season definitely). Despite the Kaiji series being on-going in the manga, the anime actually manages to end at a perfect stopping point, so easy recommend. And if Kaiji doesn't count, One Outs is a gambling series about surrounding baseball and Toua who is like a god. It lacks the tension of Kaiji since the MC is undefeatable but the show does have some fun with the rules of Baseball (episode 8 being the highlight), it's a different kind of sports series, might be worth a checkout.

Three of my Personal Favorites That All Start With the Letter "M" & Rakugo Shinju's There Too Mucking Things Up Series
Mushishi
Monster
Made in Abyss
Mob Psycho 100
Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

Mushishi is the most atmospheric series I've ever seen. It's contemplative, quiet, serene, beautiful, taps into horror from time to time, and completely unlike anything else. It's probably the most episodic anime I've ever seen, but it's 40 or so episodes feature many of the greatest I've ever seen. You can essentially watch them in any order, if you want to see some of my favorites, Lingering Crimson, Azure Waters, Raindrops and Rainbows, Cotton Changeling, Floral Delusion, Depths of Winter, Sunrise Serpents, String from the Sky, Shrine in the Sea, A Sea of Writings, Beneath the Snow, and Valley of the Welling Tides are my favorites. I say just pick the episode with your favorite name.

Naoki Urasawa is one of the best mangakas, his mystery writing is great, and the long series of Monster can be slow, but is an emotionally powerful and griping journey with several fantastic character arcs and a sleuth of memorable one-off stories. If this series was legally accessible, I think it'd be one of the best getway shows since it contains very little of what most people think of when they think anime, and is more in line with western sensibilities. There's a reason Guillermo del Toro wants to make a live-action Monster. Beginning of the series is pretty slow, if you read the synopsis I linked, it takes like three episodes to get to that point. But I definitely highly recommend it.

Made in Abyss is something truly special. It captures the adventure spirit extremely well, the Abyss itself is a character in it's own right, and perhaps the most interesting setting I've seen in anime. The anime also gets dark, like, physically hard to watch at points dark. But even if that's a turn-off, I'd still recommend watching the first episode at least, maybe the first three (which are like, the pre-amble to the journey). Kevin Penkins music is amazing too, and it's one of the best looking TV anime ever.

Mob Psycho 100 is probably the best looking tv anime ever. Yuzuru Tachikawa (from Death Parade) does a great job as director here, and ONE's base material is fantastic. I'm not huge on One Punch Man, I liked it mostly for the sakuga, but Mob Psycho 100 is a legit thematic powerhouse and it's second season, though I haven't finished it yet, has been a constant treat whether it be delivering truly powerful moments, just a really fun monster of the week type episode, or delivering a TV episode with above movie animation quality, I love it. Side-note, I kinda hated the first episode or two, but it's definitely worth sticking through.

Rakugo Shinjuu is a mature adult multi-generational drama centered around a niche performance art known as Rakugo. Like, they basically showcase full length rakugo performance (imo, they aren't boring to watch thanks to the "camerwork" and fantastic seiyuu performances), but the character work and emotional journey is well worth it. I loved the premiere, and I do think the show takes a bit to truly get cracking again (around episode 8 or 9 is when it starts becoming a full blown masterpiece). Yakumo is one of the most fully realized and nuanced characters in the medium, and it was very close to being my favorite anime ever.

Very randomly I decided to watch Made in Abyss on Amazon Prime while I was on a brief getaway these past few days. It was me, myself, and I at night when nothing was going on and I must say it's probably one of best written and thematically beautiful shows I've seen in recent memory. There's really nothing bad I can say about it. The lore of the world itself is what drives the characters onward and the show develops like real life itself. It starts off with child-like innocence but when we're thrust into the real world then stuff can do sideways on us rather quickly. Check it out! I can't wait for more!

Yes, there's even a dub for you weirdos who watch their anime like that. :sneaky:

Couldn't have said it better myself. Mob Psycho 100 is a slice of life plus some of the best animations you will ever see. Undoubtedly brilliant and I highly recommend it. One punch man is a comedy, with some amazing fight scenes and animation, and is also brilliant and definitely worth the watch.

Some others I would add:

- Fate: zero, fate: stay-night, and fate: heavens feel
- Violet evergarden
- Saga of tanya the evil

The fate series is magic mixed with horror, violence, and comedy, and is pretty entertaining, but some of the later episodes do drag on. Some of my favourite characters though.

Violet evergarden is just a cheesy slice of life done incredibly well, and some episodes will definitely make you cry, but overall very nice development.

Saga of tanya the evil is very tactical and political, but very good animation followed by one of my favourite anime movies of all time. Can be a bit of a slow burn but once your in you're hooked.

Have you seen Dawn of the Deep Soul yet? I watched it last month and it is, in one word, SUBARASHII!

I know quite several people super into Fate but I ever really got into it myself. I gave the first four episodes of Zero a go but kinda lost interest, I have been meaning to go back to it though at some point, because I don't recall thinking it was bad. Worried at this point I'd just have to watch it from the beginning again and the first episode was like an hour iirc.

Both Violet Evergarden and Tanya are both series I want to check out though, especially Violet Evergarden. The trailers made it look like the prettiest show ever.
