When did Dragon Ball's popularity become mainstream?

I am curious because I don't know when this actually happened. I remember watching it growing up and being made fun of in school for it. Now it seems that celebrities, sports players, and generally large groups of people love the franchise and it is no longer thought of a "nerdy" thing to be into. At least not on a larger scale like it once was.

So when did this all change?

Hard to say, really. Probably around the same time gaming did. I remember growing up and being teased for liking db, gaming, computers, the internet...you name it. Now, all of those things are mainstream hobbies. I'm guessing with the dawn of the internet era, nerdy things became...cool...so...yeah.

Yeah same but yet there are people in their mid 20's to mid 30's who don't even know how to do stuff on a computer. Thanks to the boom of the smart phone.

That is very true, quite a few younger people have no clue what they're doing with a computer, but could out text damn near anybody on a smartphone. I like a smartphone for some things, but give me a computer and a nice mechanical keyboard and I'm as content as can be.

I wouldn't say Dragon Ball in totally mainstream. It's vastly more popular than it was but there are large amount of people of our generation that could care less about it. Not to say it won't get there where it's ubiquitous.

Not caring about it and being completely put off by it are two different things though.
Like kids in school won't get picked on for enjoying it today like they did back in my day. *shakes walker at the sky*

I think it got popular around the world once the Saiyan and Freeza Sagas aired in the Anime.

By Late 2001/2002 in America, it was EVERYWHERE and NEARLY every kid at my Elementary School that was a boy liked and was talking about Dragon Ball Z. It helps that the Early-2000's dub of the original Dragon Ball helped take the franchise too a whole new level of popularity.

But as far when it became REALLY mainstream in America and it stopped being looked at as kid's anime that was popular for a short period of time...I say the Early-2010's when social media took over and nostalgia for Late-90's/Early-2000's kids culture really exploded and Dragon Ball Kai started airing and a lot of the Dragon Ball merchandise we have today started getting made through T-Shirts, Action Figures, Video Games, etc.

They have tried and failed with others. No one wants to read about purple-haired weirdos dissing their favorite manga or anime.

I think Millennials tend to have more of a soft spot for nostalgia that things like Pokémon or Dragon Ball, heck even Digimon has a large adult following, that are acceptable. I think just with the Internet being ubitquitous, being able to watch this stuff on demand means that nostalgic Millennials can rewatch it, and other people who didn't have the chance to watch it as a kid (for whatever reason) also can.
