A 13 year-old boy from Collegeville, Pennsylvania has been charged with third degree murder and denied bail from the local juvenile detention center after his mother sent him to retrieve their legally-registered firearm from the trunk of the family car. Surveillance camera video shows the 13 year-old enter the house, point the gun at his 12 year-old sister at which time it discharged, hitting her in the chest. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators removed several evidence bags from the home and trunk of the vehicle. Authorities say several children live in the home, and several family members were present at the time of the shooting.
Tragic situation, and now a family is completely torn apart because of a child handling a firearm. The mother should have retrieved it herself, never letting her kids near it. Now he's got to live with having killed his sister, likely spending time in juvenile detention, and a family and community that will always look at him differently because of one second of childhood stupidity. What an absolute shame.
