I mean, Goku was an idiot in the Cell Games. And that cost him his own life, more so than just Gohan wanting Cell to suffer after his Super Kamehameha, IMO.

Eh, I think he just knew that Gohan was realistically the only one with the potential the beat Cell at the moment, and he probably had the foresight to know Cell might get a little Vegeta/Frieza-love-child-level desperate if the fight with Gohan was going to end in a stalemate (ie not enough time to let Gohan's potential actually out if Cell was too weakened to force it out of him).

I don't think it was stupid so much as a big gamble. And also Toriyama writing by the seat of his pants probably.
