And being Australian, I used to be on the whole anti-gun side. But hearing stuff that isn't just rhetoric - like actual quantifiable accounts - I definitely get it a lot more now.

Guns level the playing field for women by a long shot. Just imagine if every woman who was approached by a rapist knew how to use a gun and had one. I don't like guns in and of themselves but I value the protection they provide.

Oh yeah, that fact alone went a long way to changing my mind. In my state we can't carry anything at all. Not even pepper spray.

We have all sorts of random violent assault with weapons - knives, blunt force, even syringes... it's fun.

(I'm not saying it's an endemic, but it's not non-existant).

That's the way I see it. I even felt a little urgency when my ex-wife threatened me the one night, and then felt rather unsafe in the house she had a key to...
Yeah that is all it takes is a threat and when you feel like you have no sense of security, it is horrible.

I contemplated buying a compound bow so at least I had something ready to go. I don't think most criminals will wait around for me to put my recurve together and then string it up.

Yeah, that would take a bit too long. Just adopt an alligator! Let the inner Florida man flow through you! Use nature to settle the score!

Yeah. Hence Crocodile Dundee and the Crocodile Hunter.

My friends got him a shark suit when he was a pupper. He was pretty much too big for it even then.

Criminals will always find a way if they want to hurt someone!
A mass murdering terrorist in France killed over 80 people by running them over with a box truck. If guns are the problem and we could magically disappear every firearm in America tomorrow. I guarantee you with every fiber of my being the next mass killing would be people being run over by a vehicle.

I have a personal opinion that the rest of the world looks at our country in a duality. They're sickened we have the level of gun crime we do whether it's inter-city stuff or horrific incidents as these. Yet, on some other level there are some that secretly wish they could have something with them just in case, like we can. I get it that firearms may not be your thing, but in our day and age they are the great equalizer. Beyond that it's training that separates perpetrator from victim.

Listen, I have my feelings about why local police didn't act and I get it. You don't want to get shot and die because you have a family. In my agency, we're taught to just go in, but it's a personal decision. I know what I would do and if I eat it in that situation then I know my family would be proud of me.

As I said, they need to hand in their badges. Some people just aren't built to be cops. This wasn't just an adult issue, these were young children. If you don't feel the need or desire to run in there and do something the second your boot hits the ground from you're vehicle, you are in the wrong profession. Even teachers in the school, without hesitations, threw themselves in front of the children.

Or when we were told the hospitals were all getting overwhelmed and overrun, yet a large number of hospital staff were able to make TikTok dance videos.

I'm not going to fight YouTube's algorithm to find it, but Steven Crowder did a sketch during the pandemic where the first responders on 9/11 were telling a victim to hang on, speaking with urgency, and the punchline was they were coordinating a TikTok video.

I heard about it. And I have family that work in hospitals/clinics. They were never as overrun as they claimed. I think it was mostly just inner-city hospitals and clinics. Those are always overrun though because more people = more problems.

My girlfriend is a radiographer and we disagree at times with this thinking, because she gets the greater concern. But we both agree lockdowns aren't the best tactic, and she's skeptical of getting a booster of the vaccine.
