In response to the death of George Floyd, Eric Garner and who knows how many others at the hands of officers incorrectly utilizing chokeholds or pressure on the neck area to control suspects, the Phoenix Police Department have today announce that they will no longer be training their officers in the use of the carotid chokehold technique, and officers have been informed not to utilize it in the field. Other departments across the US have also banned the use of this and similar techniques. A step in the right direction.

They have handcuffs and tasers for a reason. It takes all of 10 seconds to get someone in handcuffs or tase them if they don't wanna listen. WTH would you need to chokehold someone for? What is this, WWE? What are cops? Chr... no, I am not going to make that joke.

Seems ineffective. This wasn't the traditional chokehold being incorrectly performed but rather something an officer would never have been trained to do in the first place. I think this is just the police department wanting to been seen as doing something.

That's not to say a chokehold is largely unnecessary anyway, it usually is given the tools at the officer's disposal.

Well if you roll back the calendar a bit to Eric Garner it makes more sense, but I do agree that it seems out of place to announce this just now, given that it was not a choke hold that ended the life of George Floyd, but a knee directly on his neck. Still, to be seen to be taking action at this point, I suppose, is better than inaction?

Yeah, this seems to be a response to show they are doing something. They just want to make some short-term moves so people chill out. I think people got way too carried away with this, to begin with. The man shouldn't have lost his life over a fake $20 bill but people shouldn't be out there calling for police free zones either. People who already hated the cops are just using this man's death as an excuse to be assholes at this point.

100% agreed, calling for "police free" zones is just ridiculously stupid. Parts of law enforcement need to be improved upon, most definitely, but abolishing the police is not a means to make that happen. Anarchy begets anarchy.

I assure you that getting someone in handcuffs if they're combative is epically harder than you think it is. Tasers fail about 30% of the time due to clothing getting in the way or them being on drugs. You usually then have 1 of 3 options, your baton which may or may not work depending on them being on drugs and/or really hyped up on adrenaline, your fists and feet along with everything that comes along with that, or go to your gun. Being "in the fight" is a very dynamic and stressful situation.

Maybe better training is needed then to protect the cops and the general public? I feel like some cops are not in good enough shape to be cops to begin with.
