That's always the unfortunate reality of being abused, it inevitably has an impact on the mind of the person who was abused and either conditions them to seek out awful people for their own relationships or turns them into awful people. Sadly, some also turn into abusers because it's what they know. Hopefully she got some help and managed to get past all of that, but if not, you're absolutely right to distance yourself from that.
