Dragon Ball Z Cell kills Trunks should have been Vegeta's moment to ascend

I've posted about this moment in our thread(s) of favorite Dragon Ball moments. Goku uses instant transmission to take the exploding Cell to King Kai's planet, making the ultimate sacrifice (albeit, an unwelcome sacrifice for King Kai, Gregory, and Bubbles). But, Cell was able to pull himself back together again and then use instant transmission himself to go back to Earth. During that time, he uses Frieza's death beam to kill Trunks.

Despite Gohan just achieving this form. Despite how this would have changed a whole lot with how we perceived Gohan. I think this would have been the perfect opportunity for Vegeta to also reach SSJ2, and then he likely would have killed Cell on his own. The rage of his son being killed...that's the one thing to push Vegeta over the edge. Vegeta, who pushed himself to become Super Saiyan. Who has extensive training and experience. This would have been a great opportunity, I think, for him to reach the 2nd level.

Discuss.

I don't think Vegeta cared enough about Trunks at that point. I don't think he truly cared until he experienced raising him.

He still went on a rampage from anger...much like Goku did when Frieze turned Krillin into a hot air balloon and when Cell stepped on 16's head. Gohan didn't care much about 16...he cared about what he believed in. So I think this is still a valid way for Bobs and Vegete to go SSJ2.

Not to disregard your point, but I think the common thread with Vegeta is that he gains new abilities through hard work and training. It's how he hit SSJ, SSJ2, SSG, SSB, SSBE, and acquired his new Forced Spirit Fission technique. He's the train til I die guy in the series. Nothing wrong with that.

Spoilers!!!

It's really not clear if he hit this on his own. He used Babidi's magic to achieve Majin state...and all of a sudden he could go SSJ2 after that. We don't actually see him do non-Majin SSJ2 until after Z.
I forget the original source of information, but I'll just leave this here. Also, I fixed my post and read the damn manga!!!!

This was so unconvincing and based purely on opinion and conjecture. So, I acknowledge what you're trying to say here, it just does very little for me.

Unless Toriyama writes it which he writes very little tbh. It's all head canon and conjecture, but I think it's safe to assume that in 7 years of non-stop training Vegeta gained SSJ2.

He had years of non-stop training and failed to reach plain ole SSJ. So for me, they never showed it and our first time seeing what looked like it, which many just call Majin Vegeta, was only because of Babidi. Indeed, though, unless Toriyama writes it...then again..if he tries to, he probably forgot what it really was and will just do something different anyway.

Gohan realistically didn't care about #16 enough to turn SSJ2 either, if this is the case.

I think vegeta didn't care until trunks died and he realised that trunks meant a lot to him. Because he didn't care as much then though I don't think it was enough for him to ascend

I don't think vegeta could ascend here because as a character he was still developing, and he still had a long way to go. If you think about majin vegeta in the buu saga and how he acts then, vegeta still had a way to go before he could power up imo. Plus, the cell saga was all about gohan replacing goku, and if vegeta had powered up here it would have taken away from the point of the arc.

Vegeta didn't complete his character arc until the fight with Kid Buu. He finally admitted that Goku was the best and from there on out their rivalry was competitive versus life or death. I believe everything happened just the way it should.

I can see this working for Vegeta's character but it sacrifices too much great content for me to be a fan of the idea. Especially since Vegeta already plays a crucial role in the climax due to Trunks death. So Vegeta gets an awesome moment no matter what but Gohan loses his major one. And considering Vegeta's still relevant in Dragon Ball and Gohan's just kinda there, I'd rather Gohan get the shining light in Cell arc.

Toriyama did this himself when he let the whole arc go to waste afterwards.

I don't think Toriyama knew how big this anime would blow up and when he saw it gaining popularity, he couldn't flip the switch from Goku to Gohan.

Then again, maybe he just forgot because he does seem to forget a lot of things... lol

Yeah, if I remember correctly, he didn't plan to go beyond the Frieza saga.
