Read all of Chainsaw Man, didn't care much for the last arc tbh but the series as a whole was a lot of fun. The International Assassin arc in particular was insane, really can't wait to see that animated. Wonder how much this will cover.

How good was this compared to other new era battle shonen? I heard good things about it.

It is probably the best of the new era shonen. IMO, the ranking goes Chainsaw Man > Kaiju No. 8 > Black clover > Fire Force > Jujutsu Kaisen > Sakamoto Days > Demon Slayer > Hell's Paradise > My Hero
