Reportedly a show was review bombed and comment spammed... and so instead of disabling comments on that one show or you know... having better moderation, they just nuked years worth of community comments. Everything is gone.

I don't know about anyone else, but I frequently use the comments to decide if I'll like something, or to find out if and episode is filler garbage/find where the actual new content starts.

Can I find that out elsewhere? Yeah, but it was really easy just being able to scroll down to comments on the actual episode.

Yeah this is bad. I do the same. I see what people are saying if I am not sure. You can easily tell if people are spamming stuff. It isn't that hard. They should have just temporarily disabled it for this one show. They made this a bigger issue for themselves and will likely lose money for it.

I've only been using CR for a few months. I had no idea that it even had comments....
Yeap... years worth of comments on shows that have been around a very long time. Last year I started watching One Piece for the first time. The comments were so helpful to skip all the shitty filler crap and when the actual new content starts. On top of that, some episodes that hit hard, it's really nice to read the comments to see other people's thoughts. Some really awesome thoughts/viewpoints presented in the comments section. All gone now.

Yeap. I guess the problem here was that it was hateful comments against gays. In which I say, just fucking moderate better. Use AI. Use anti-spam tools. Or just close comments on shows that garner that kind of attention until it wears off.

That is always going to be a thing online. Everyone picks and pokes at everything. I thought they did have moderation on there already? ffs it is 2024, if you are not able to manage comments wtf are you doing? They had the money to invest in AI tech for comment moderation or just to hire people to do. Or like you said, just stop comments on shows that contain this stuff for a bit.

It seems strange though. Like you can clearly see this manga focuses on gay relationships. So it isn't like the anime was forcing it into something which I know people do complain about. So really, it sounds like it was something a bunch of trolls thought would be funny to do. I bet it stems from some morons on 4chan. They love to do organized BS that ruins things for other people.

But for them to handle it this fast... That is what is strange. It seems like they were waiting for a good enough reason to do it. Does Crunchy Roll have ESG investors? Cause I know having anyone comment on anything could hurt those scores.

.... I just checked. Venrock is one of their biggest investors.

Venrock is a venture capital firm formed in 1969 to build upon the successful investing activities of the Rockefeller family

I know Blackrock pushes stuff like this but I don't know about Venrock.

I would go as far as to say this is almost censorship.
It is censorship but because they are a private company, they can do it and nothing can be done about it. Anytime something like this happens, just see if the company is on the market and see who invests in said company and you will often get more answers that route.
