To be fair, I only agree with Toriyama to a certain extent. Goku isn't a complete disaster or a bad father per say. He definitely occupies that middle of the road for his sons. Now what people are forgetting is that he's an absolute friggin' train wreck as a husband. This is also putting our Chi-Chi disdain aside as well. He sucks as a partner and I have no idea how their marriage works.
Chi Chi sucks as a wife as well though, so I think that's why people always forget that Goku sucks as a husband. I also think that Piccolo was so much better of a father figure to Gohan than Goku was as well, so that's why people think Goku is a bad father, at least in comparison to Piccolo.
Honestly, I always thought that Goku's and Piccolo's way of "parenting" were based Confucianism and Toaism as they fit the mold or more less.
I mean Piccolo did try to drown 4 Year Old Gohan in a Lake!
Honestly the only time Piccolo was better than Goku Dad wise was during the Cell Games! Then Again Goku died twice for Gohan so yeah!
He didn't try to drown him, he was trying to wake him up. Also he was still evil at the time.
True he was Evil but saying that gohan was Pampered was a bit Ridicoulous you gotta admit!
The kid had nice clothes and a priceless artifact he wore as a hat. Piccolo grew up by himself in the wilderness whose life purpose was just to kill one guy.
I think "pampered" might be an appropriate word to use, comparatively.

BTW did you know that gohan was Originally planned as 3? He even holds up 3 Fingers!
Gohan was definitely pampered as a child, primarily because of Chichi. That's a key part of his character throughout that part of story. He's a spoiled and sheltered crybaby.
