Dragon Ball Do you miss the older fighting style from Dragon Ball?

For those of you who watched Dragon Ball, it was more martial arts oriented and grounded hand to hand combat over what we see in DBZ and DBS. I know a lot of people enjoy the over the top battles and match-up we see today but since I watched them out of order (DBZ first, then Dragon Ball), I have come to appreciate the older ways of battle/matches. I am curious to see if this may be a direction they go back to down the road (disabling power-ups somehow, like in the manga). What are your thoughts?

I do wish there was more martial arts. It's almost as if they forgot about fighting style and all that matters now is power levels, kii blasts, and that blinky-teleporty fast movement thing they do.

Agreed, it would be nice if they brought back some of the actual martial arts focus. The over the top battles were fine for a while, and I suppose they sort of had to keep pushing them higher and higher because each enemy was supposed to be a greater and greater threat. It would have been odd if suddenly they were back to just martial arts, unless some sort of event were to happen that made it impossible to fly, use ki blasts and move faster than the speed of light...then it might be interesting to see them get back to the roots of the show for an arc or two.

I don't follow the manga yet but I plan to get into it soon but this new villain apparently keeps them from powering up so who knows.

That would be a great thing if it were to happen. A bit more, well not realism considering we're dealing with extraterrestrials and all around improbable physics, but a bit less fallacy perhaps. Just something other than "here's a new boss, here comes a new power level/version/power up, now you're untouchable again, enemies die, the end."

I have not watched dragon ball but I read the first volume and I think it is cooler how they are fighting in dragon ball, but I also like the dragon ball z fighting way.

Super incoreated a little of the old school moves when Goku used them on Califla, but I do prefer the martial arts style compared to spamming ki blasts and rapid punching.

I think it helped having them unable to fly. I think going forward, limiting them somehow would be a good idea to keep battles fresh.

I mean, they can just as easily do regular martial arts in the air...they just don't seem to do it.

I am thinking the animation for it was too time consuming. I am noticing a pattern with Toriyama just getting tired of doing things lol

Perhaps. I'd think it's just as easy to animate it in the sky as it is on the ground. Or are you referring to animating marital arts in general? That makes sense. I don't think Toriyama does the animation though.

In Super, no I don't think he does anymore. I think he commented on not liking the style. And yeah, the martial arts part.

I might be mistaken, but I though Toriyama only drew the mangas and bigger production studios animated the anime.

Could be right. I know he played a role in the style of the animation at the very least but it would make sense to have a team of animators for the anime.

Not really, but I do miss the consistency of the fights in the Manga. Super fights are very inconsistent, and GT fights (although GT is very old) are boring.

Toyotaro needs to learn how to make a fight consistently flow from one panel to the next like how Toriyama did during Z. Otherwise they just seem choppy and all over the place with beats of action missing from one panel to the next.

Super was the worst for consistency...

another thing I hated about Super was the Tournament of Power and how time flowed. We'd be 15 episodes in and only 8 minutes passed, but so much happened.
