Dragon Ball Anime Series (Plus Movies!) In Chronological Order

dragon ball order.jpg

Watching the Dragon Ball anime series with all the movies and specials in chronological order can be tedious work! With a whopping 24 movies/specials on top of over 600 episodes in total, there is a lot of content to digest here. While most specials and movies are not considered canon nor is the entirety of GT, I am going to be including them in this list for the sake of watching as much Dragon Ball content as possible. Because the movies and specials aren’t part of the “true timeline” the stories won’t fit perfectly but according to ability and power-scaling, they will make sense. So if you are interested in watching everything in order, you have come to the right place!

Have you ever attempted to watch everything the series has to offer in chronological order?
Do you think there is a better, more logical order for the anime, movies, and specials to take place?

It's in the comments I posted
But the comment about the third movie is technically missing when the native American gets revived. So that one is a jumble of the arcs from the end of roshi's first training the boys till ep 78 when native American gets revived
Haven't watched the 4th movie The path to power. So I'll watch that after I get to the point where goku is taller
User "vlorsutes" from Reddit summarizes it quite nicely:
The first three are "condensed" but alternate re-tellings of certains arcs of the original Dragon Ball.
  1. Movie 1 - Is an alternate retelling of the first story arc, replacing Pilaf with King Gurumes
  2. Movie 2 - Is an alternate telling of Goku's and Kuririn's training with Roshi before the 21st Budoukai
  3. Movie 3 - Is an alternate telling of the Red Ribbon arc and the 22nd Budoukai.
The fourth "Dragon Ball" movie, actually released during the GT era for the tenth anniversary of the franchise and featuring GT-era animation, is a heavily condensed and alternate version of everything from the start of Dragon Ball to the end of the Red Ribbon arc.
In this guide, they appear in release order, which you can verify checking the dates of the last episode released before the guide lists the movie (ex. movie 1 was released December 20, 1986 and ep 43 December 17, 1986). You could get technical with the chronology of the movies but I think listing them as they are in this guide offers a nice break for those who want to do a completionist watchthrough of the original series.

I’m still kinda new to DB. However I wanted an opinion on something. I over the last few months watched all of OG DB, and I’m at episode 248 of DBZ currently. Should I just go back and watch all those movies after Z? Since there is quite a few I didn’t realize existed it seems. If only I saw this guide before starting the series. Haha. 😅

It depends what you're feeling. I honestly wouldn't watch "chronologically" first time (because the movies are their own unique timeline essentially). They're also their own formulaic style.

If you're feeling like more Z, definitely just watch the movies after. If you want to see more of the series I'd pick either GT or Super and go for it. Either way, the DBZ movies do feel like DBZ; Super and GT have very different feels.

Dragon Ball Z follows the adventures of the adult Goku who, along with his companions, defends the earth against an assortment of villains ranging from intergalactic space fighters and conquerors, unnaturally powerful androids and near indestructible magical creatures. While the original Dragon Ball anime followed Goku through childhood into adulthood, Dragon Ball Z is a continuation of his adulthood life, but at the same time parallels the maturation of his son, Gohan, as well as other characters from Dragon Ball and more. The separation between the series is also significant as the latter series takes on a more dramatic and serious tone. The anime also features characters, situations and back-stories not present in the original manga.

Have you ever attempted to watch everything the series has to offer in chronological order?
Do you think there is a better, more logical order for the anime, movies, and specials to take place?
Add Daima! It takes place in between Z and Super and Builds on super lorewise!
Like you added Gt and the movies so i think its fine!

Has anyone noticed that DBZ movies are more popular than Anime movies from other franchises in general?
Yeah its super weird?
Like of course the canon movies are but why in the flying fuck are non canon filler movies with partly copy pasted villains so popular?
Its especially weird looking at dbz games were those movies get muuuuch more love than the original dragonball!
Like why do we get slug instead of demon king piccolo?

DBZ and Pokemon are the peak of accessible anime to the west because they were just the right thing at the right time (the 90s).

Anime is nowhere near as niche as it was 25-40 years ago, but DBZ and Pokemon were lightning in a bottle that were made popular by variety programming like Toonami and Cheez TV. It only stands to reason kids of that time hungered for the movies.

Whereas now, anime in general is more popular, but there isn't just one thing everyone gravitates to, likely brcause of streaming services and the abundance of programming choice.

Because we had limited access to Dragon Ball content and watching Goku turn Super Saiyan, use a Kamehameha and save the day - to a Soundtrack of 00s grunge - was peak.

Yes. Because those villains scale better and are easier to incorporate. Pre-Z Dragon Ball was not as well known by the West at the time.

Because people in the West had access to Lord Slug and the context. I don't think Dragon Ball had even been properly dubbed until they finished with Z.

Most of what you said is wrong first up
Games RIGHT now focus even less on dragonball than old ones did!
Remember budokai 3 had demon king piccolo and bt 3 had a decent ammount!
Compare that too fighterz and xenoverse which get nothing! And sparking zero wvich has less db rep then bt 1!

Actually its america only who did not have dragonball! Every other did Dragonball first or atleast during z!

The first several of both series didn't though.

Pre-Z makes very little narrative sense in the context of FighterZ and Xenoverse.
Actually its america only who did not have dragonball! Every other did Dragonball first or atleast during z!
yes. And none of the other countries really dubbed it until they saw the success of DBZ in the West.

Also "every other country" - every non-speaking English country; almost all English countries had the US dub of DBZ first.
