Exploring the Evolution of Power Levels in Dragon Ball

Hello

The concept of power levels in the Dragon Ball franchise has always been one of its most intriguing and debated aspects. From the early days of the Saiyan Saga, where power levels were a tangible metric for a character's strength ; to the more recent developments in Dragon Ball Super, the portrayal of power scaling has evolved dramatically. Many fans argue that power levels in the original series were more grounded; while others feel that later arcs, especially those involving Gods and multiversal threats, have created inconsistencies.:)

The question I want to raise is whether the increasing scale of power levels is doing a disservice to the series. In earlier arcs, characters like Goku and Vegeta had clear, measurable goals & rivals. Now, with the introduction of deities, Angels & even Universes themselves, does the concept of power lose its meaning? Is there still a personal challenge for characters to overcome / does the sheer scale of power create a situation where no one truly feels threatened anymore? I have checked https://www.crunchyroll.com/news/guides/2022/8/16/feature-the-ultimate-dragon-ball-series-story-arc-guide-mlops for reference .

Lastly; what direction do you think the series should take in terms of power scaling? Should it return to more relatable, grounded battles / continue escalating to greater and greater extremes? It’ll be interesting to see how the Dragon Ball Universe addresses this, especially with upcoming projects like Dragon Ball Daima on the horizon.

Let me know your thoughts and opinions!

Thank you !:)

Power levels provided an easy way of comparing strength, but very very quickly lost meaning when Frieza hit 1M and Super Saiyan was a 50x multiplier.

I think Daima might act as a restart button but I have yet to watch it so I don't know.

If you follow the manga (I don't but I am aware of Moro) you will see they continue to just add to it but power levels are meaningless and it just comes down to who can beat who without numbers involved.

I've been involved in the Battle Power community on DBZ Forums for over a decade. The battle power logic still applies before and after the Saiyan and Freeza Sagas, there just aren't any canon battle powers outside of that time period is all.
