I was on vacation the last week and got bored. I don't care for pirate genre stuff, but I gave it a try anyway. I made it up to episode 80-something (Wadol arc)

I actually like it to some degree. Luffy is a hilarious character and you can't not like him, and when it comes time for him to play "Goku", he delivers. I like how he has to tell virtually every main villain that he's going to kick their ass.

Zoro is a good character as well. I just think the 3rd sword in the mouth thing is super lame.

The show does suffer from the corniness of oldschool anime. Half the villains are really cheesy and have really lame powers. My favorite so far is Captain Kuru. There was a dark & morbid atmosphere to his character. I just wish the names of his attacks weren't lame cat puns. "Out of the bag" technique... really? lol

You kinda have to accept the show for being a product of its time and just enjoy it though.

East Blue is somewhat weak, but I really enjoy Alabasta and Skypiea, they were the peak of One Piece. They're not as action based or dark as CP9 or Whitebeard War. With that said, East Blue, CP9, and Whitebeard War are all better than the Part II Sagas. I used to be too hard on Fishman Island and Punk Hazard, but everything after that is garbage.

I also think One Piece is too long. This is coming from someone who can tolerate the length of Naruto and Bleach.

I haven't gotten to any of that yet. Alabasta is next after Wadol. The whole "Mr #0-10" thing reminds me of the Espada thing though.

The show does feel like it should be nearing closure at least by ep120, so if it doesn't, then yes, it's dragging on too long.

Drum Island and Alabasta are both part of the same Saga, the Baroque Works Saga. I just called it the Alabasta Saga to make things less complicated.

I've been considering it for a while because it seems popular for some reason, but it just didn't look good to me at all.

If you watched 10-12 hours a day and skipped every opening and closing I think it could be done in around 3 months. Never watched it myself because I think.....I might go insane.

One thing that bothers me about the show is that Luffy and his crew call themselves pirates.

Outside of Nami's "steal from other pirates" past, none of them are actually pirates.

Every single member of the crew has demonstrated strong moral compass and with Nami's exception, they don't ever steal from anyone.

They're really just seafaring adventurers searching for a legendary pirate treasure cache.

But Luffy insists on calling themselves pirates.

I love One Piece, but the anime is too padded out for me to recommend it (once they start adapting one chapter per episode essentially). There are definitely times where I think the anime elevates the manga material and the G-8 Filler arc is a ton of fun but overall, the manga is definitely the way to go.

One Piece is personally my favorite manga in terms of storytelling. I feel that if you want to enjoy One Piece you probably should watch the first half in anime then maybe transition into manga? Usually what people do is they read it then watch the scenes they like to see how it was animated.

Or for instance, if people get to somewhere hype in the manga, they can just go to the episode number and watch it until it the episodes get slow again.
