" Instagram is “constantly accessing” the cameras of its users’ phones, a new class action says.

The lawsuit, filed Sept. 17 in San Francisco federal court, accuses the company of spying on its customers despite claims it only accesses the camera when it is told to.

“This access goes beyond the services that Instagram promises to provide,” the suit says. “Instagram has no legitimate reason for accessing users’ smartphone cameras when they are not using the Instagram camera feature.

“By doing so, Defendants have been able to monitor users’ most intimate moments, including those in the privacy of their own homes, in addition to collecting valuable insight and market research on its users.”

The goal is to collect as much data about its users as possible in order to sell targeted advertising space, the suit says. An update to iPhones that notifies users when third parties are accessing information was the spark that ignited the lawsuit. "

Is anyone suprised? I always got mocked for keeping tape over my front-facing camera... GUESS WHO'S LAUGHING NOW!?
As much as I enjoy using it to put pictures of my cats on there, I am really considering just removing it. Make my own site for sharing pictures with people.

Never joined instagram, now I'm pretty happy about that. Does not surprise me in the least. If they can access the camera, of course they're going to use that to their advantage.

People these days tend to forget... Social Media is free because we are the products.
But most people on social media don't know about cybersecurity much less care about it.

Agreed, but just imagine some of the things that camera could've been on to capture...I mean, a lot of people have their phones with them when they do just about everything. Getting dressed, bathing, going to the bathroom, spending...quality time with partners...everything.

Not to mention sometimes kids take the phones and teens have phones too. Ironically enough, I don't see any outrage over it and I gotta just scratch my head on this one. Sheeple gonna sheep.

I don't know what changed or when it changed, but people have seemingly become more gullible, less intelligent, less capable of critical thinking, and too damn sensitive. I guess this is what happens when you have a group of people who grew up on the internet and have knowledge about online socializing vs people's first experience of it being on Facebook or Twitter.
