In a case that grabbed global attention and sparked a strong outcry against the abuse and harassment women suffer for simply walking down the street, news broke today that a member of the London Metropolitan Police Service, a male officer in his 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping and murdering Sarah Everard on the evening of March 3rd, the last time she was seen. He has also been arrested on suspicion of indecent exposure in relation to a second individual, and a woman in her 30s has also been arrested on suspicion of aiding the officer in commision of the crime. CCTV footage documented her final evening, and she followed all of the habits women have drilled into them from a young age to keep them safe -- she let her friends know she was leaving their house to head home, she let her boyfriend know she was on her way home via text message, she wore brightly coloured clothing, she took all main roads with CCTV cameras until she hit a blind spot, and still she managed to fall victim to a depraved and disgusting individual intent on harm and self satisfaction for reasons no one may ever know. It's become something of a rallying point for people the world over, women are constantly told to not travel alone at night, take those main roads, wear bright colours, don't go out too late, talk to someone on the phone while walking, have a proper conversation with them, text your friends, partners, family members, someone that knows you so they know when you get home again, walk with keys in hand, look confident as you walk as if you know precisely where you're going, even if lost, and in general, try to stick close to home. Do this to feel safe while walking, do this to avoid getting attacked or kidnapped. Yet here we have a case of a POLICE OFFICER, someone sworn to protect the people, kidnapping and murdering a young woman, just 33 years old, because she made the dire mistake of walking home at nighttime.

The officer was an active member of a squad assigned to protect royal properties and diplomatic dignitaries. Clearly he knew how to do his job and function normally, so what it is that made him think he had to kidnap and murder someone, and allegedly flash another person? How does anyone, irrespective of their occupation, make the conscious decision to kidnap and murder someone? Why couldn't she have been left alone to get back to her house and get on with her life? It boggles the mind to think about how and why people do what they do, but it is staggering that this was a woman who followed every precaution she should have followed, as a young woman out alone at night, and it still wasn't enough. I hate to come off as a sexist old man-bastard, but...clearly all women need to be accompanied by a man, or in a group of at least three, if they're going out at night. I'm not saying women can't protect themselves, not at all, I know women are perfectly capable, but you put a small, young woman on her own up against a trained police officer and it's no contest who wins there. If she'd had a man there with her, he may not have been a match, either, but you can bet there would've been far more of a struggle and far more or a commotion made to draw attention to what was happening on the street. Same if she'd had a couple of girlfriends with her, a chance to make a commotion and draw attention. Maybe I'm way off base in saying that, but it's awful reading time after time how a woman has been snatched, usually assaulted sexually, and then murdered just because she was out alone.

Protect the womens from bad men, leave them to us harmless pervs.

Lock him up and throw away the key. Chop off his bits, too. Doesn't need those if he's looking to hurt young women.

Having walked home at night on several occasions in my younger years, I can tell you that it just is not a good idea to do so alone. I once had a car with two dudes trying to pick me up when I was 17. I was walking home from work and they were driving slow next to me saying things... On a main road, mind you. If it was not for the police that flashed their lights and went after them, they could have easily grabbed me and pulled me in the car, no one would have known. I don't know who the cop was but I am still grateful they were there. The one guy in the car got pissed because I was "ignoring him" and likely would have gotten out only moments later.

I know in an ideal world, women wouldn't have to worry about this kind of stuff but we don't live in a perfect world and unless you are able to carry a gun and know how to use it, you should never be out at night alone as a woman.

That's absolutely terrifying, and yeah, whoever that cop was is a hero, definitely stopped something very bad from happening. I hope he went on to pull them over, get their details. People like that who would stalk and yell at a young girl out alone. I agree, he probably would have gotten out and done something had the cop not been there if he was getting angry at you ignoring him. People like that are egotistical dipshits, but they're also dangerous enough to worry about. I hate that women have to live with that fear because some men can't control themselves and think that women are there to serve their needs. We need a device women can carry that sends out some sort of biological signal to a certain area so no males in that area can get an erection. Doesn't necessarily mean women are safer from sexual assault, but at least it takes one aspect out of the picture. Make it happen, science.

So very true, we do not live in anything like a perfect world, and yeah, women should absolutely not go out at night alone.

I don't know who he was, the cop, but I am so thankful for him being there. I could have been kidnapped and never seen again, raped, or even killed.

I don't think we need to condemn all men for the faults of the few. Most can and do control themselves. I think making places safer is ideal and this involves having enough police on the streets who are trained to watch for stuff like this. Police should be better trained and earning way more than they do. I feel the same way about teachers. Any dipshit with a degree can be a teacher and this is why we see cases of pedophilia in schools all the time. Pay them more and require more from them in order to teach children.

We will never have a perfect society because we have freedom. If we take away freedom, sure crime and things of that nature will go down drastically, but at what cost? We may as well live in China.

Agreed, absolutely stopped something terrible from happening, a true hero! I'm one of those over-protective types, I hear these stories and the first thing I want to do is find all of my female friends and wrap them up in bubble wrap so no one can touch them. I don't like seeing people get hurt outside of anime and things like that, and it's not that I don't think they can protect themselves, but there's this trigger in my brain that reads these stories or hears them from people and it fills me with this sense of guilt almost, and I just feel so bad that so many women have to deal with that. I want everyone to have fun with their fun bits, but only between consenting parties on their own terms.

Oh agreed, what I'm talking about is a device women can activate if someone approaches them that can "disarm" a man within, say 25 feet of her, so the chances of being sexually assaulted are, at least, lessened. Most men do indeed know how to control themselves and are genuinely well-intentioned, but those that aren't...eww...

This is very true, education is a huge part of the problem in a lot of areas in life at the moment. People don't know how to do near enough anything for themselves anymore, because education is cutting more and more from the curriculum, focusing more and more on standardized nonsense testing and destroying programs that genuinely help build people up into proper well-rounded individuals. The solution to ignorance is education, but the schooling system forgot that a long time ago. Teach life skills, teach sex education, teach boundaries, teach about pregnancy and condom usage, teach kids first aid, teach them how to parent. If parents are the problem with today's kids, then teaching today's kids how to parent fixes the next generation, doesn't it? It doesn't solve people being screwed up in the head and having interests that are outright wrong, like pedos, rapists and such, but erasing the level of ignorance might help them realize their compulsions are wrong and try to fix them. The fact people see therapy for problems as something "for crazies" rather than something that genuinely helps you get over something is bad, therapy can actually help people or teach them the self control they lack. Does it work 100% of the time, no, of course not, but it can help in a good deal of cases. Totally agree with educating people far better than they do now.

We will never have a perfect society because we have freedom. If we take away freedom, sure crime and things of that nature will go down drastically, but at what cost? We may as well live in China.

Agreed, though you can't help but feel that with every new innovation that comes out, we're getting closer and closer to mass surveilance. Smart doorbells that send video and audio to a third party, smart home technology monitored by a third party to see when you're in your house and in what rooms, a smart device you talk to in order to order supplies, change the music or give you information on something...and it's totally not listening...smart TVs that have been purported to have been left with a backdoor in place for NSA surveillance and so on...Suddenly we're not in Kansas anymore, Toto...

This is the kind of topic that tickles my tin hat. I keep the front-facing camera on my phone covered with tape and always face it upright. Same with laptops. Webcams and microphones are never plugged in when they are not in use and if they are for some reason, they face the floor and I manually disable the mic on the computer. Windows ain't my problem no more. Smart TVs? Yeah, I don't do those. Alexa? She can kiss my pasty Italian ass. I don't use any social apps on my phone anymore (the last one being Instagram, removed it). I get the appeal of all this stuff but I value my privacy. I live a boring life but it is my boring life and I don't want some pu pu platter in the Chinese government making money off me in any way. Same for lizards. Mark F*ckberg can piss off. Take that soy-infested Twitter dick with him. Oh and Bezos? I still stand by my "he can go suck a diamond incrested cock" statement.

Very similar here. No social media (well, I say that, I have a facebook and twitter, but don't touch twitter and only touch facebook on one day out of the year, the obligatory family wishing me an insincere happy bday day), but no social media apps on my phone, all smart features completely deactivated on the tv, Windows limited to one PC (and when I get the chance to upgrade it, it'll be gone, too), no Alexa, no Dash buttons, limited use of Amazon and no use of webcams, microphones or Kinect sensors. If it's not absolutely 100% necessary for the operation of the technology in question, it's turned off or removed outright. Too much interference these days! Lone exception are the one or two website I let show me those ads I've spoke about, and only so I can support them a little bit financially. Even there, I have security features to make sure nothing bad slips through. I may not be a tin-hatter at this point, but I'm taking no chances!
