Video Games Sega Still DOES What Nintendon't

I've known about the stark difference between Nintendo and Sega in regards to their relationship with their consumers for a while now, but this recent video really stood out to me. Besides Sega and Sonic video games, Nintendo and their franchises are the only video games I actually care about within the gaming industry, so this really affects me personally. Contrary to popular opinion, outside of Sonic 2006, Sonic Boom, and Sonic Forces, I don't think Sega makes any truly bad Sonic titles, so I believe Nintendo is going to face some stiff competition with Sega in the 2020s. Sonic Mania for example is quite possibly the best Switch game out there, and that game was created with the help of a Sega fan who created a mod of Sonic CD.

Your thoughts on the future of Nintendo and Sega?

Could you imagine how far along Sega would be right now had they kept making consoles and kept their IPs on Sega platforms? It's a shame they shot themselves in the foot with the Saturn and the Dreamcast to the point they had to stop making hardware, but there's no question they've always been more embracing of their fanbases and I love that they don't shy away from mods, fan projects and the pure dedication of people to their products. I wish Nintendo would figure that part out, because it's their only true downside. They never really embraced online gameplay, they don't like people making fan projects of their IPs and they can't stand people finding ways to make their games better. Why? I don't have a clue, it's the most senseless thing for them to be overprotective of. Spreading your passion for a series is free promotion for a company, and being a fan of Nintendo should be a rewarding experience, but in most cases it isn't. You have to fear that the boardroom, full of businessmen rather than gamers (We miss you, Iwata-san!), is what is driving this stubborn behaviour. They need someone that understands the business AND the culture of gaming to really bring the company back into the present. Their products are excellent, their games are phenomenal, their attitude towards their fanbases is atrocious.

I feel like the rivalry between Nintendo and Sega would be way more fierce if they kept their consoles going. I mean just look at the SNES and Genesis rivalry they used to have. Now it's turned into friendly competition with the Super Smash Bros and the Mario & Sonic games. So I'm somewhat glad they don't make consoles anymore.

I agree, Nintendo needs to get with the times. Their online services are terrible, and they shut down any attempt at making online play better, and in the case of older games, make online play actually accessible. I could go on, but I really feel like just giving one example here.

I do agree the rivalry and crossplay in games is nice, I never thought I'd see Mario and Sonic on the same screen when I was younger, and yet now it's happened many times. That part is awesome and I hope it continues. I do miss the console rivalry, though, and the two companies pushing each other to be better, not just from console to console, but from game to game. It was such a cool thing to be a part of. Sony and Microsoft had that for a little while in the 360/PS3 era, but since then they just sort of co-exist and have more or less matching ecosystems, so...even that has died off. It would be nice if someone came along and really shook up the console wars a bit before they die off completely.
