This is Mistare fusions opinion on (Majin) Vegeta
My opinion is i didnt like him (as a protagonist) until i read the morro arc or watched GT!
Hes like ARGH Im Angry i have to beat Kakarotto and he chews other out while having murderd tons of people!
Like even in super hes in cell arc mode he isnt really a full good Person!
I personally think for example Shadow or other shounen Rivals are better in that regard either they dont murder or they are actually sorry and try to improve or both!
I think the fact Vegeta made it a case to ask for anyone to be revived whom he killed for the DBs (when Goku asked why not say everyone killed by Boo) with Vegeta saying there were ppl he killed too shows a regret for the actions, though in a subtle way compared to Super. Which I like, I many times prefer subtletie than openly shown things. Like, in the Cell arc, Vegeta saying he was sorry to Gohan and lashing onto Cell were ways to show his progress, with future Bulma, when Future Trunks told her that, even being surprised Vegeta would go that far. I like this side to the original DB, in which the progress is many times shown without a whole statement and point dedicated towards it.
I also think the thing with Goku was still boggling Vegeta so much that he pretended to become evil, to goad Goku into fighting him. That's why Goku quickly ordered Bobbidi to send them into a special place to fight ---- and as Goku pointed out later, he didn't sell his love, all that thing about him lacking compassion and wanting to be the old way was deeply rooted into the feeling he couldn't let go of Goku...
... And that was the unresolved part of the Cell arc... Vegeta had already shown his care for others there, but the Goku thing was still unsettling to him as shown by his overly grief and distaste for Goku dying, to the point of lacking the will to ever fight again... As he wouldn't get the chance to set the scores that still bothered him --- being behind Goku despite all his immense efforts.
And then with his final monologue in the kid Boo battle, we saw the progression the Boo saga mainly strived to, Vegeta letting go of his obsession and accepting Goku as better than him... Finally coming to peace of why he could never surpass Goku. It's even presented by Vegeta in the VIZ manga as a irony --- "a Saiyan who fights for justice and is kind... I should HATE him... Good luck Kakarrot, you're the champion", basically showcasing his acknowledgment as a progress from the once Vegeta who couldn't acknowledge this merciful side of Goku, but now, also having the same goal to protect others, acknowledging and being at peace with Goku, someone who always had purer intents in improving himself, always wanting new challenges to be the best possible version of himself, while Vegeta, despite already at that point fighting for others, still doing fighting for more egotistical reasons, to prove himself... So that came perfectly as the character progression from the final acknowledgement of the missing piece that was still troubling him ---- making him finally capable of living in peace with himself and have the best of life, not overstressing himself upon the need of proving himself as the best one... Which to me was kinda glossed over and not well represented in Super, with THERE, Vegeta getting a regression with the fact he was still #2 constantly bothering him. But that's my opinion ofc.
