What defining factor played a role in Vegeta becoming a hero?

Curious to see what people think played the biggest role.

I have read/heard people say Bulma, others say Goku, some say Trunks, and even him losing complete ties with his own people since they were mostly destroyed.

He was originally supposed to be killed by Goku in the Saiyan arc, but Toriyama kept him in the plot due to his popularity. So yeah lol
I would imagine this was the case in the manga first? I never got into that so I would not have known. Would have sucked if he killed him off.

To be honest, I think Vegeta only really overstayed his welcome after the Freeza arc. His death at the hands of Freeza felt fitting, even though Freeza himself was only created to replace Vegeta as the main villain.

Over stayed his welcome!? :9000:

Him being a part of the story after the fact allowed for us to see massive growth in his character and lead to other good characters too like Future Trunks.

Nah, I felt he was better when his main goal was to obtain immortality with the Dragon Balls, not surpass Goku.

He deservedly died a dog's death when Freeza killed him. I dislike it when mass murderers are forced into becoming good guys just because they have a lot of fans.

I can honestly see arguments for both sides.

Vegeta was a very effective villain. His first fight with the Z Fighters was arguably the best in the series and the Namek Arc was where he shined the most as a character.

On the other hand, Vegeta had the best character development in the series thanks to him being revived. Future Trunks wouldn’t have been a character either and he’s the best written character in the series.

Overall though, I’m glad Vegeta survived because Dragon Ball Z as we know it would not have been the same without his involvement in the Cell Saga and the Boo Saga.

Perhaps one of the greatest things about Toriyama is he literally had no plans at all and somehow made it work.

But I am forever mad that I will never know how the Android saga was originally meant to play out.

Tons of great villains!

Ah yeah i think the main issue with vegeta is that in the original series and a lot of super vegeta isnt redemed enough him apologizing for killing the namekians shouldve happend sooner!

So, if you look at it from an in universe type of way, I think it's a combination of a few things.

We seen time and time again how Goku can change people, his kind heart and just way of life brings something out of people that is hard to explain, I think that surely played a huge part Then you look at all the training he did with Trunks during the lead up to fighting Cell, where he still was kind of a dick and everything, you see how much he had changed when he snapped seeing Trunks get killed, if he was still his heartless evil self at that point, he wouldn't have really cared all that much. But he still wasn't what I'd call a good guy or a hero at that point, just not really a bad guy. Then the life he spent during the time skip with his family, that helped soften him up. I mean there is stuff there during that time skip from the end of Cell, to the Buu Saga that we miss, and who knows what all happens during that time, but family life surely played a huge part in it. So I don't think it's just one thing that changed him, but just everything around him as a whole that took him from an evil planet conquering villain, to one of earths mightiest heroes.

That first night with Bulma did wonders in changing my man Vegeta. But for real getting with Bulma and having his son Trunks definitely changed Vegeta, he had already began to think Goku's strength came from the fact he fought for others like his loved ones. So having his own family he became just like Goku in a way, finally fighting for someone other than himself and to protect his family and home that is now Earth.
