I'm a sucker for tough female characters in anime so I enjoyed her a lot when she was first introduced. She had that natural tomboy charm to her. Also it has been noted that Saiyans are attracted to tough women. So to me, Gohan was first attracted to her not only for her looks but being a tough gal. Fast forward to becoming a wife and mother and well... What the hell happened? She is so passive and boring now! I feel like her character kind of got wasted here. if Gohan was attracted to her being tough, how can he be attracted her her now when she is so plain and simple? I know he is only half Saiyan but come on.

Gohan has a passive personality now so they basically made her the female version of him. I never really cared for her myself so the change didn't bug me.

Maybe his passive nature is in part down to him being half human but still, it just felt like they really didn't have any use for her anymore outside of spitting out Pan.

Android 18... I see the appeal there and I do enjoy her for what she is but she hasn't changed much at all since DBZ. She is still tougher than Krillin and still a badass. My complaint is mainly down to how much they changed Videl when it wasn't necessary.

I don't know if there was anything else they could have done with her. Like thinking about how stacked they are with characters, where would she fit in? Chi-Chi was one a fighter too but she took on the role of being a wife and mother. Granted, she didn't lose her hot temper or toughness but I think it is down to them being from two different generations. Between Chi-Chi, Bulma, and 18 we already had 3 tough and intelligent women right there. Gohan himself has slid to the back burner as well so for Videl to have a bigger role in the series, Gohan would have had to be in a better placement for it.
 
She was never a standout character to me. She was kind of a bridge gap character. Someone who would give Gohan more meaning outside of fighting.

I think dude hated Chi-Chi... Maybe he hated Videl too. I guess this is true though. Gohan kind of got pushed back a few times which would make it hard to keep Videl in the picture.

And I can't say I disagree. We'll never again see Gohan like we saw him when he was younger. The creative powers that be made sure of that.

Just now seeing this. I don't agree on that entirely. Gohan becoming more of a scholar didn't mean Videl had to stop chasing her dreams. After all, Saiyans are most attracted to tough women and seeing that he is 50% saiyan, it never made sense to make her soft. Nothing wrong with focusing on being a parent after having a baby. Chi-chi did the same thing... Bulma, well... She can afford to have options. I still think completely stripping away Videl's tough side was just down to writing and the writers not knowing what to do with her anymore. Gohan feels like he got the same treatment and got pushed to the back so Vegeta can take the spotlight with Goku.

I think in a way, they did it to counteract Bulma and Chi-chi. It is no secret a certain someone loathes Chi-chi.
