:cocky: vs. :fist2:

I don't know if a thread was made like this before. I am only talking about the DBZ versions of the characters. Not necessarily about fighting ability or strength, but just general character concepts and from an entertainment perspective. Which would you say was better in Dragon Ball Z?

Going to put a poll with this.

This is a tough choice, but jokes and memes aside, I would honestly give the win to Yamcha. I would say that Tenshinhan is a better character than Yamcha in Dragon Ball though.

In Dragon Ball Z, Yamcha was able to accept his role as a Z Fighter more than Tenshinhan. He knew he was better off as a supporting member of the team, like as a method of transportation a few times in the Cell Saga for example.

Tenshinhan got in the way more and in general was more of a wild card. He was still helpful when it came to stalling Nappa and Vegeta and later Cell and Boo, but he purposely put his life at risk more and was criticized for it once after doing so against Cell by Goku and Piccolo, and I would even go as far as to say Krillin also knew his limitations more on the battlefield as well.

Yamcha was also more sociable to everyone during the Boo Saga, and it kind of rubbed me the wrong way when Tenshinhan said he would never see the Z Fighters again after the Cell Saga. It was almost like he was too frustrated that he couldn’t keep up with the Z Fighters in a way, and that he let his pride as a fighter and as a warrior get in the way of his relationships with them.

This is just my personal opinion on the matter and you’re all free to disagree with me.

Yamcha's a fun, chill guy. But Tien is just an all-around unit who puts everything on the line, even if he's horribly outmatched.

Pre Z (Early DB), I'd prefer Yamcha. He had an attitude of going to help Goku, acknowledging Goku as better than him and a funny yet commited to martial arts side that I liked more than Ten's more stoic and fully dedicated attitude, though when I watched way back, Ten definitely had a cooler aura as a guy you'd like to see fighting the strongest ones in part 1.

I wasn't too fond of Yamcha on Z, he seemed more sidelined, appeared more arrogant and yet more cowardly in the sense of being the first one to tell to run or that the Trunks' story seemed too farfetched, using DBs for his girlfriend... it seems he lost that serious commited charisma that balanced his personality well in part 1. As for Ten, he didn't shine too much on Z either, but he remained faithful to his commitment to martial arts and being the lone wolf type, saying after the Cell arc that they'd likely neve meet again, which remained true as far as the original series, no Super, goes. He had some cool entrances too like vs Bootenks.
