There are ties to Japanese culture with the tingle-back thing and how/where they view energy sources (coming from the spine) so there is the logic behind it but it was lost on Western audiences. I mean I thought it was very stupid until I read/heard about that concept. I get it now but still don't exactly like it. I loved the raw emotion behind their transformations.I'd like to think the same rules of Super Saiyan don't apply to both universes. U6 can find a tingle in their back to transform, but U7 has find the right emotion. Prior to Super ever coming out I had always thought that Gohan, Goten, and Trunks had an easier time doing the transformation because they had human blood, and Super Saiyan seemed to initially be based off strong emotions. I remember when I saw Goten and Trunks go SS for the first time, it felt awesome. I was hyped as hell. When Cabba did it, it was .. okay .. but then when he revealed the tingle concept to the others, it definitely started to ruin Super Saiyan for me.
one would think it should be made harder because having the pure blood of a Saiyan vs half-blood or partial blood would restrict natural Saiyan abilities
The longtime fans were the ones who didn't care for it. Like I started watching when it came to the US and the things they did later in the series and in Super do rub you the wrong way in terms of impactful moments. I still enjoyed the series as a whole (even Super) but in a way, it is as if they tarnished the bigger earlier moments for the major characters. That's actually a really good point.
Of course, this is all speculation - but iirc Vegeta makes a comment about Gohan being a powerful Saiyan hybrid. And also makes comments (in the anime) about how if Gohan trained he'd be stronger than all of them. Since Gohan doesn't train, we never get to see if that is true, lol.. But, I would use this information to justify that the Super Saiyan Goten and Trunks use is different than the Super Saiyan Goku and Vegeta use.
Bringing this back to your first post - I completely agree that when it seems like the transformation is achieved effortlessly it takes away from the story, but if I look at it from the perspective that Super Saiyan is different for different people, then it at least doesn't ruin my favorite scenes for it. (Goku, Gohan, Vegeta)
It doesn't make much sense to westerners like us because it's based in Daoism and eastern religions about chakra points. It actually does make a lot of sense in the context of those schools of thought.I mean the backtingle thing (which is the only stupid thing) is anime exclusive!
With this said, I don't think just any Saiyans should be able to go Super Saiyan. The legendary status of Super Saiyans were ruined by Goten and Trunks, not by anyone in Super.
