The WWE part of this is not really relevant to the discussion, as I realize most of us here aren't exactly wrestling fans, but the sheer tragedy of what's happened prompted me to post this. While out swimming at Venice Beach with his 10-year-old son, Shad Gaspard was caught in a strong current and both he and his son were swept far out into the ocean. Rescuers arrived fairly quickly as his wife watched on from the beach, and while rescuers found Gaspard first, he directed them to his son who was promptly rescued. Tragedy, however, was quick to follow as a large wave caught Gaspard and sent him underwater while rescuers were still tending to his son. This was the last time anyone saw Gaspard, as he did not resurface and has not been seen since. A search has been underway for more than 24 hours at this point with no trace. How awful for his 10 year old son to have to witness that after having already been through a traumatic experience in being swept out to sea. His wife could do nothing but stand by helplessly on the beach and watch as they were both swept away and then her husband driven under by the waves. The chances of finding him have been deemed "bleak," and it seems the effort to recover what is expected to be his dead body seem to have been scaled down as more time has passed. What a tragic thing to happen to a family, irrespective of who it is.

(Side note, but how disgusting some of those comments are on that article...blatantly racist and ignorant, and at a time when a family has just been devastated.)

Sheesh... I never cared much for the ocean. Always freaked me how it can just suck people under. Yeah, those comments are a bit much. The one comment though brought up an interesting point about the oceans getting a break from us. I don't know how things function in terms of oceanic environments but there is a chance less human interactions have altered the oceans. I mean, it has been yeeeeaaaarrrrssss since a lot of places in this world got a break from us.

That part is absolutely true, the oceans, and indeed the world as a whole, seems to be a lot better off with us having been locked away from it for a while. Some areas have gotten a lot healthier, some species of animals have had a chance to increase their numbers once again due to a lack of human interference (I remember one specific species of turtle in Florida having a massive regrowth year because they were free to breed on the beaches without interference, though there was concern that the beaches were going to reopen right as their eggs were about to hatch...so...who knows how that went down. Without people destroying things, I'm sure a great deal has changed and hopefully improved itself a bit.

Man, that is scary. You can just be swimming with someone and get pulled under and away. The fact that he literally risked his life for his own child says a lot about the kind of man he was. I feel like he should have been given a float or lifejacket of some kind though before they went after his son.

That's such a shame, but not unexpected, either. He was missing for a good while, and the fact that they couldn't find him with search and rescue after he was swept away all but confirmed he likely hadn't survived. Glad they found his body, though, as it provides a bit of closure to his family, if nothing else. Absolutely gutted for his family, at the same time, though.

Agreed, it was as simple as just being swimming with his son and then a strong wave or two later and they were swept out. Must have been terrifying, and obviously ended tragically.
