Education goes a long way. When you pull back the veil on what any given weapon can or cannot do then it becomes decidedly less "scary" for the uninformed. To me now, they're tools like a hammer or a screwdriver.

The problem, too, is a lot of loud antagonists make AR-15s sound like they're miniguns with a million bullets in a magazine. So if you really have no idea, you're like "Yeah, why should a civilian have this?!"
